‘Have you ever held on?’ - Andrew Churchill - 2021
‘Have you ever held on?’ - 2021
An original painting by artist Andrew Churchill.
Andrew’s subjects include self-portraits, portraits, still life, studio interiors and, more recently, views of his garden and imagined post-apocalyptic landscapes populated with angry birds. Drawing from his knowledge of Modern British art, his interest in contemporary painters and the established masters Andrew works largely intuitively often in fast bursts of activity bookended by concentrated periods of looking at the works in progress. Recent self portraits and garden paintings have been painted over earlier works. Using what is already there to inform the new painting, largely in a game of chance, he describes the process is being like ‘collaging with paint’. Whilst the self-portraits are most explicitly autobiographic, Andrew believes that all his paintings should be seen as self-portraits of one kind or another. He works every day in his studio at the end of his garden.
